Gratitude in Motion: How Animals Taught Me to Live with Purpose

By Angelical Life Coach Cecilia Albuja

Fifteen years ago, after nearly three decades in corporate and retail sales, I made a life- changing decision to slow down and work from home. I never imagined that stepping into the world of pet sitting would become a path of deep emotional and spiritual transformation —one guided by animals who became my greatest teachers.

At first, I knew very little about working with pets. But what I quickly discovered is that animals don’t require credentials—they respond to energy, presence, and authenticity.

Through observing their behavior and learning from experts like Cesar Millan, I realized that dogs reflect the emotional state of their humans. That awareness alone was life- shifting.

The turning point came when I began studying KRYSTAL & CRISTIC Reiki with the Zolemgeh Estrella Formation. There, I learned to cultivate calm, balance, and clarity within myself—because animals feel everything we carry. My daily meditation practice became essential to showing up grounded and ready to care for the sensitive souls in my care.

Over the years, I’ve shared my life with countless four-legged clients. Lola, a French Bulldog puppy, taught me patience and trust. Shane, a gentle Rottweiler, helped me release old fears. Mani, a reactive Chihuahua, proved that healing is possible with structure and love.

Each of them offered more than companionship—they brought growth, self-awareness, and profound moments of joy. Working with animals also deepened my sense of responsibility, especially when it comes to their health. I’ve witnessed the consequences of rushed decisions—like a client’s dog who lost his vision due to an adverse vaccine reaction. That experience pushed me to advocate for holistic care and conscious choices rooted in research and compassion.

At the heart of this journey is gratitude. True gratitude isn’t passive—it’s intentional. It’s in every walk, every bowl of food prepared with care, every quiet moment shared.

Animals remind us to slow down, to be present, and to lead with love—not just for them, but for ourselves.

As I speak at the Gratitude Effect Summit, I offer these stories not just as personal reflections, but as invitations. Invitations to tune in, to heal, and to see our connection with animals as a sacred gift. Because when we choose gratitude, we don’t just change their lives—we allow them to change ours.
